Municipal Athletic Center of Agrinio (Agrinio Stadium)

The Municipal Athletic Center is considered to be the "jewel" of Agrinio's athletic infrastructure, but also of the wider region. It is located on the region of Voidolivado and it is the largest and most organized athletic space in the Prefecture.  Its construction started in 1959-60 and the cost of the stadium was 90.000.000 drachmas. The construction works lasted for 22 years in total, covered an area of 75 hectares and created numerous athletic spaces.

The first athletic competition in the Municipal Athletic Center took place in 1968 and since then numerous competitions are organized every year.

Some of the most important competitions are:

  • 4-6 May 1990, European Women's Volley Championship
  • 30 May 1997, Pan- European preliminary contest in women's handball (participating countries: Spain, Portugal, Greece and Norway).
  • 30 October- 2 November 1997, Balkan Badminton competition (participating countries: Rumania, Bulgaria, Moldavia, Yugoslavia and Greece)

The expenses are covered by various events, groups and programs hosted in the stadium, such as:

  • Monthly rents to soccer associations
  • Handball, basketball, volley courses
  • Swimming associations
  • Cafeterias
  • Swimming programs of the Municipal Athletic Center of  Agrinio
