The dam of “Kremaston”

The dam of "Kremaston" is one of the largest earth-filled dams in Europe. Its construction started in 1962 and was completed in 1966, when the hydroelectric station was also founded. The construction work was conducted by an American company.
It is an earth-filled dam, which means that it is constructed with soil and rubble, and not by concrete. Its storage capacity is 8.130.000 cubic meters. It is about 160 meters high and the width of its base starts from 670 meters to a few decades of meters on the top.
On the base of the dam there is the hydroelectric station of Kremaston. The water of the lake is channeled through four pipes (with the capacity to generate 109 MW) to the four water jets of the station. The station is regularly checked by the National Center of Power in Athens and functions as a "supporting" station of hydroelectric power.
The Hydroelectric Dam of “Stratos”
The hydroelectric dam of Stratos was constructed in 1989 and formed the artificial lake of Stratos, the fourth lake of the river Acheloos.
The Hydroelectric Dam of “Kastraki”
The hydroelectric dam of Kastraki was constructed in 1969. It is the second dam of the river Acheloos. Its height reaches 95 meters and its length 530 meters. The dam forms the artificial lake of Kastraki.
